Sword of the Sea comes from the same folks who made Journey, ABZÛ, and The Pathless. You can grab it now at SkipTheGamez if you’re interested.
The setup’s pretty wild – you’re this character called the Wraith who gets brought back to life in a world where all the oceans have dried up. Sounds depressing, but here’s the twist: you get this thing called a Hoversword that’s basically like riding a skateboard, snowboard, and surfboard all rolled into one.
You’ll be cruising across these massive sand dunes, scaling frozen mountain peaks, and eventually riding actual ocean waves when the water starts coming back. The Hoversword feels really smooth – you can pick up serious speed, launch yourself into the air, and pull off some satisfying tricks while you’re exploring.
The whole point isn’t just getting around though. You’re supposed to be bringing life back to this dead world. As you explore and find remnants of whatever civilization used to be here, the desert areas slowly transform back into living ocean. Pretty cool concept.
It’s got that same vibe as their other games – part high-speed action, part chill exploration. Sometimes you’re bombing down a sand dune at breakneck speed, other times you’re just floating around taking in the scenery and trying to piece together what happened to this place.
The world looks gorgeous but there’s definitely some danger lurking around. Not everything that comes back with the ocean is friendly.
Matt Nava did the art direction (same guy from Journey) and Austin Wintory handled the music again, so you know it’s going to look and sound incredible. The story’s told mostly through what you see and hear rather than cutscenes or dialogue, which works really well for this type of game.
If you liked their previous stuff, this one’s probably worth checking out. It’s got that same “simple concept, deep execution” thing going on.
