Josef’s Story

Josef isn’t the kind of robot built for glory. He’s small, scrappy, and at the start of Machinarium he’s literally dumped on the scrap heap outside the city walls. That could’ve been the end of the story—except his girlfriend Berta gets snatched by the Black Cap Brotherhood, a gang of rusted thugs who run trouble in the city. So Josef dusts himself off and heads back in.

What follows is part rescue mission, part brain workout. The game doesn’t give you chatty NPCs or endless dialogue trees. Instead, characters “talk” with little comic bubbles—simple animations and symbols that tell you everything without a single line of text. It’s weirdly charming and keeps the focus on the puzzles, which range from clever logic problems to oddball mini-games that feel like they’ve been plucked from an old carnival machine.

Visually, the game is something else. Every backdrop looks like it’s been drawn and painted by hand, full of bolts, pipes, and rusted panels. It feels lived-in, like a robot city that’s been patched together for decades. The soundtrack by Floex is equally distinctive—dreamy in places, unsettling in others—and it sticks with you long after you quit the game.

At skipthegamez, we’re bringing Machinarium in its pure indie form: no filler, no gimmicks. Just a strange, beautifully crafted adventure about a little robot who refuses to stay in the junk pile.
